About the Project

Shaheed Udham Singh (Dec 26,1899 – July 31, 1940) was an Indian Sikh activist, best known for assassinating Micheal O’Dwyer in March 1940 in what has been described as an avenge of the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre. He is also known as Ram Mohd. Singh Azad, which symbolizes unification of 3 major religions: Hinduism, Islam & Sikhism. He is referred to as ‘Shaheed-I-Azam’ which means ‘The great martyr’ in Urdu. Being a ‘daring deed’, ‘fighter for freedom’ and ‘The torch bearer of Indian freedom’, Punjab Government has decided to construct a sole memorial for Shaheed Udham Singh at Sunam.

Sunam is a city and a municipality in Sangrur district in the Indian state of Punjab. It means ‘the name with a good reputation’, which is the birth place of this famous patriot.

The memorial has been inspired by ‘Sikh Architecture’ which represents the last flicker of   religious architecture in India. Udham Singh Memorial has been categorized and united with each other to make the place of enlightment, inspiration, strength & aggression. Its geometric garden of inspiration, interpretation centre consists of displays of literature, an open-area theatre for the performances to enlighten the young generation through interactive means. The Samark will showcase the martyrdom of Saheed Udham Singh and sacrifices made by him in saving their honor.
