Memorial of Wadda Ghallughara is dedicated to commemorate those who lost their lives in the major massacre that took place near the KupRohira, located in Sangur district of Punjab, to save the Panth (Sikh Nation). This massacre, claimed the lives of 30 thousand Sikhs. The historical incident of Wadda Ghallughara (holocaust) is honored by constructing the memorial near the place where this incident took place.
The memorial of Wadda Ghallughara is designed as
– a major urban landmark that dissolves into the cultural and architectural canvas of the area
– a mirror of the past and lens to the future. Drawing from rich historical traditions are used as easily identifiable symbolic features and elements, which tell the story of war, inspiring people to follow the deeds of the martyrs.
– a place to inspire and motivate people, it provide visitors with an ambience of serenity, beauty, peace and quiet meditation.
The symmetrically designed complex with the series of steps rising to the memorial tower for churning the masses – their values, efforts and ideas for enlightenment and patriotism. The architectural idiom of the complex is to fuse traditional and cultural space conception with that in the frame work of the contemporary program and function. The outside space is the garden of peace and freedom with the play of geometry and naturalist surroundings. The memorial complex houses an entrance gateway, auditorium, interpretation centre, memorial tower, tourist information centre and open air theatre for outdoor functions. The exterior facade is the combination of nanakshai bricks and stone blended in the traditional architectural to create a landmark in Punjab region.
